Abstract
This quasi-experimental research was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of
'Brain Gym' activities on the cognitive development of children at the preschool
level in the following aspects: classification, seriation, concept of numbers, number
operations, concept of time, concept of space and problem solving skills.
This quasi-experimental research was conducted in two preschool centres
located in Kepong and Jinjang, Sentul Zone, Federal Territory, Kuala Lumpur. There
were a total of 60 preschoolers aged six years old involved in this research in these
two preschool centres. They were divided into two groups: 30 of the preschoolers
were placed in the experimental group and another 30 preschoolers were in the
control group.
The independent variable of this research is 'Brain Gym' which is made up of
activities integrated in the teaching and learning process of the experimental group's
normal curriculum. Over a period of three months, 'Brain Gym' activities were
implemented for 5- 10 minutes everyday by the trained teachers ofthe experimental
group before the preschoolers started their Science and Mathematics lessons.
The data was collected though the children's scores on the pre and post tests.
The collected data was then processed and analysed using the statistical software
package, SPSS, version 16.0. The types of analysis utilised were descriptive analysis
and inferential analysis, involving means, percentages, t-test and eta squ~re.
The outcome of the research showed that there was a significant difference in
the cognitive development between the experimental group and control group in all
aspects with the t-value of 10.389 (df= 58), p< 0.05.
More specifically, the independent variable in this research i.e. 'Brain Gym,
activities have a significant positive effect on the cognitive development of
preschoolers in the following aspects: classification (t-value = 4.879), seriation (tvalue
= 4.251), concept of numbers (t-value = 7.447), number operations (t-value =
7.370), concept of time (t-value = 10.661), concept of space (t-value = 4.462) and
problem solving skills (t-value = 2.692), with df= 58, p< 0.05.
This research was bring a lot of meaningful impact to the preschoolers,
teachers, curiculum developer, the teacher training instituition and also to the parents.
