Abstract
lately there tt,ave been a lot of reported landslides happening on or near
residential sites. This worries the resident and the authorities. Construction on hill
slopes needs proper planning and study to help prevent unwanted risks such. B_S
landslides. Unstable ~Iope needs to be strengthened. Failed slope wi" have to be
reinstated.
This is a study about using a structural and biological approach in stabilizing or
reinstating slopes. Fir~t, studies of typical siope failures were carried out by visiting and
inspecting the sites. Field survey includes pictures of the site, configuration of slope
surfaces, types of soils and failures and the geometry of slopes. Then, back in the lab,
graphical and data analysis were done to classify slopes and failure cases. Slope and
falture geometry were studied and analyzed based on data conected In the form
described earlier.
This study indicated that most cut slopes, even with mild sloping, still fail after
tong period of time a~r it was cut. This shows that manmade slopes need effective
supporting structures in order to hold for a long time, and not only relying on grass
bonds to bind it. An i"teliocking type of stabilization structures were developed in the
lab. This interlocking structure will also allow for plants or grass to be planted in
between the voids pr()vlded. The plant win assist In quickly removing excess water
within the slope thus reducing the instability of the slopes.
