Abstract
This thesis will discuss the Urak Lawoi Language in Thailand from the perspectives of
ethnography and its language relationship with Malay Language. The study is done in
Lipek Island, Satun, Thailand, which is also known as the Urak Lawoi Village since the
era of Rama the Fifth. The study is focused on the description of the usage of the
language according to the ethnography of communication framework, which was
introduced by Hymes (1964). According to Hymes (1964}, the analysis of a
communication event begins with a description of a communication component in the
acronym S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. The other objective of this study is to discover the genetic
relationship between the Urak Lawoi Language and Malay Language, by comparing two
aspects, i.e basic vocabulary and personal pronouns. From the aspect of the genetic
relationship, it is found that both languages are a dialect of the Malay language.
Comparison of the basic vocabulary found that 87 percent of the vocabulary of both
languages are cognate. In the aspect of personal pronouns, it is found that the Urak
Lawoi language has three types of personal pronouns, which is similar to the Malay
language, and the pronouns have singular and plural forms too. However, from the
sociolinguistics aspect, pronouns in the Urak Lawoi language are neutral, that means
anyone can use these pronouns without any social constraints. This shows that there is
no social stratification it this community.
