Abstract
The energy potential of two types of renewable and clean energy sources along
the coastline of Malaysia were investigated. They are ocean waves and offshore winds.
The investigations were carried out using the data obtained from Malaysia
Meteorological Service (MMS). Sixteen locations were chosen and each location is
comprised of sea square measuring two-degree longitude and two-degree latitude. The
data used for the analysis was from year 1985 - 2000, spanning a period of 16 years.
Site with highest potential of ocean waves energy and offshore wind have been
identified. Also the influence of monsoons on the energy potential has been studied.
A stochastic simulation of wave conditions time-series was made for a location
situated in the South China Sea off the coast of east coast of West Malaysia. The
simulation method was first applied to three different locations situated in United States
and the simulated data were compared to available buoy data. The input data for the
simulation were derived from ICOADS visual observations records. The simulated
wave conditions time-series was able to reproduce realistic wave conditions as given
_ by buoy measurements.
A three-dimensional rotating wind turbine blade was analyzed using FLUENT.
The wind turbine is of horizontal-axis wind turbine, three blades configuration, 10 m
rotor with constant chord using S809 airfoil, downwind and constant rotating speed.
The analysis was made to improve the aerodynamics performance of the wind turbine
by introducing a tangential sweep angle. There models were analyzed: 1) no
modification, 2) 10° forward tangential sweep at 40% blade length, and 3) 100
backward tangential sweep at 40% blade length. Furthermore a two dimensional
numerical study on S809 airfoil aerodynamics performance using a shear stress
transport k-co turbulent model was also made for different values of angle of attacks.
