dc.description.abstract | This study was the preliminary stage of the development of wet formed fire retardant fiberboard. Aluminium trihydroxide (ATH) slurry was used as the fire retardant chemical and it was precipitated through laboratory method. Wet process (S2S) was used to manufacture fiberboard with admixture fibers from rubberwood and old corrugated container. Fiberboards were made at ratio of rubberwood fibers to old corrugated container fibers as 10010, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 011 00 in weight percentage. Meanwhile, 2% liquid form of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin, and 10%, 15% and 20% of ATH based on the oven dry weight of fibers were used. It was found that oee fibers highly retained ATH in fiber mat compared to rubberwood fibers that have low retention of A TH. Oxygen index test, thermal grayimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analysis demonstrated that at sufficient loading of A TH could significantly improved the fire retardant property of fiberboard. There was a remarkable increase of oxygen index at ATH loading in fiberboards studied. Observation using scanning electron microscope (SEM) was made at the edges and fracture surface of fiberboard .. It was found that fiberboards made from oee fibers formed denser than fiberboards made from rubberwood fibers. The use of ATH has resulted in more compact fiber network. The results showed that the internal bond strength (IB) and dimensional stability were significantly influenced by the A TH loading. Loading of ATI I increased the IB strength and dimensional stability of the fiberboard. Most of ATH loaded fiberboard met the standard for IB strength specified by the .lIS :\ 5906 : 19K~. All liberboards han~ sho\\ed thickness s\\elling \alue over the 12% limit. From this study. liberboard made Irom admixture libel'S Irom oee and rubberwood with ATH were found to hav~ potential to warrant investigation of their application as actual pane] products <lIld fire retardant boards. | en_US |
