Abstract
The objective of the research is to measure the effectiveness of a learning
strategy, known as Inquiry Based Learning Strategy supported by Inquiry Cycle
Orientation Model (PBI+OKI) among secondary school students. PBI+OKI is
modified from various inquiry learning models which based on cognitive
theories, particularly the ones that are related to critical thinking. The changes
of the students' behaviour are assessed through several aspects like their
understanding of the inquiry skills, critical thinking skills, achievement
motivation, learning attitude and metacognitive awareness. This is a quasi
experimental study. One hundred and twenty students were divided into three
different groups, namely Pembelajaran Berasaskan lnkuiri dengan Model
Orientasi Kitaran lnkuiri (PBI+OKI), Pembelajaran Berasaskan lnkuiri (PBI) and
Pembelajaran Amalan Biasa (PAB). These students were randomly selected
from three schools in the District of Kinta, Perak Darul Ridzuan. One way

analysis of variance ANOVA was used to measure the main effect toward the
dependent variables for the three treatment groups. The data obtained were
first cleaned using Rasch Model followed by the Analysis of Covariance
(ANCOVA). In order to evaluate the relationships between inquiry
understanding with critical thinking, achievement motivation and learning
attitude, regression analysis was applied. Lastly, the data obtained from the
interview sessions was further explained qualitatively. The result showed that all
the null hypotheses were rejected. There were significant differences on all the
dependent variables toward the independent variables. The result also showed
that critical thinking, achievement motivation and learning attitude are strongly
related to inquiry understanding skills after PBI+OKI model was exposed to the
students. Likewise, after the model was practiced, it was found that the
metacognitive awareness of the students has increased.
