dc.description.abstractAspects of reasoning in science in the form of basic and integrated process skills and scientific thinking were introduced into the primary school science syllabus in 1997 but studies continue to show that student performance in these skills is still low. Teachers of science and mathematics subjects have also been provided with ICT facilities and training but past studies reveal they continue to employ the expository method of instruction in teaching. Therefore this study investigated whether student performance in integrated science process skills and scientific thinking skills could be improved through the use of the multimedia-aided cooperative inquiry method. A quasi-experimental research design was chosen for the study. The samples consisted of 176 year six male and female students with an average age of 11 years old. The Scientific Thinking Pretest scores were used as a covariate. All groups were given a multimedia software entitled "The Earth and The Universe" (Bumi dan A/am ~f!_mesta) to use in three different modes, namely, cooperative inquiry, individual inquiry, and expository modes. Data collected were analysed using ANCOVA and ANOV A. The findings showed that students in the cooperative inquiry group scored significantly higher in the Scientific Thinking Skills compa~ed to students in the individual inquiry and expository modes respectively. However there were no significant differences in the means between all groups for performance in the Integrated Science Process Skills and the Attitude Towards Science by method and gender. These findings showed that the MultimediaAided Cooperative Inquiry Method is as good as other methods for teaching the contentbased Integrated Science Process skills but is more effective in promoting the contentfree scientific thinking skills.en_US
