Abstract
Study of the Roadside Eating Spaces for Place-making in Kuala Lumpur City Center
The study aims at identifying the physical aspects and customers' satisfaction required to
construct roadside eatery space in Kuala Lumpur city centre and to identify the criteria that
determine the positioning of a roadside eatery space that provides functional, activity and
visual aspects that are inter responsive with its environmental characteristics.
The study explores the meaning of place and space to further understand how the quality of
their ambience is established. A place may be confined within a specific border or may be
physically borderless. The outer ring of light of a bonfire constitutes the concept of border
which determines the 'place' and the heat that fills up the volume of air around it is the
'space'. Place and space influence human felt value through the perception of physical art
and human behaviour, which are closely interrelated to feel the place. A place and space
that can provide satisfaction to customers or visitors is said to have the aura of 'sense of
place'. The physical elements and the surrounding place created with beauty provide
attraction and generate the bond with man to experience tranquility. The aura 'sense of
place' exists through the qualities that expound out of a given place. In this study,
established qualities and the qualities to be formed to provide for visitors and the
surrounding ofRMTJ are identified.
Two case study locations in Kuala Lumpur city centre have been chosen. Place-making
qualities (accessibility, activities, comfort, image and sociability) proposed by 'Project for
public spaces' (1975) have been adopted to evaluate respondents' perception of satisfaction.
A total of 330 respondents answered the questionnaires and 6 respondents were randomly
chosen for semi-structured interviews. A full participatory observation technique was also
employed on sites.
Findings indicated that there is positive influence of the physical aspects on all the five
place-making qualities mentioned above for D'Bistro Medan Mara (RMTJ DMM).
However, the influence of physical aspect on roadside eatery spaces along Jalan Masjid
India (RMTJ 1M!) shows less positive perception for items in relation to comfort, image and
sociability. They need to be refined to provide customers' satisfaction on the quality of
roadside eatery spaces in Kuala Lumpur city centre. In response to the frrst research
question, aspects of location, design and fittings are the physical characteristics that would
influence the aspects of qualities in place-making. These would include comfort, activity,
sociability, image and accessibility to create attractive RMTJ for the satisfaction of the end
users.
The fmdings shows that the responsive environmental qualities, according to Bentley et.al's
(1985) theory are strong and inter responsive with their environments at RMTJ DMM except
for quality of 'permeability'. Responsive environmental qualities at RMTJ JMI are weak and
not inter responsive with their environments except for the quality of 'variety'.
Thus, in answering the second research question, the results shows that there is a strong
relevance to the qualities of responsive environment by Bentley et.al (1985) in relation to the
case study ofRMTJ. These qualities deem to respond to the aspects of function, activity and
visual of its surrounding. The weak existence of the qualities at the study area is the criteria
that should be avoided, when detennining the location of RMTJ in the surrounding context
of Kuala Lumpur city center.
