This study explores the effects of financial attitudes, knowledge and practices of single mothers toward economic empowerment. A model for single mother‟s economic empowerment is constructed by combining the KAP theory with the dimensional of women empowerment (personal freedom, family economic decision and household decision making). In this study, questionnaires are distributed to single mothers in the state of Penang and 116 are collected. The study found that financial knowledge has significantly affected financial practices that have significant impact on economic decision making, which in turn affected household decision making and personal freedom. In this study, age and income were treated as moderating factors. The study found significant direct effect of income on single mothers‟ economic decision making. The findings suggest that importance of financial knowledge, financial practices and income in predicting economic decision making. The study also concludes that economic decision making has greater impact on household decision making than personal freedom. Some practical implications for economic empowerment of single mothers were discussed.en_US
