Abstract
Membrane technology is one of the most promising separation tools in water treatment technology. However, the major obstacle of this technology is the membrane fouling. Recent researches are focused on the development of the nano-composite membranes to improve the membrane antifouling performance. In this study, the magnetite nano-composite membrane, composed of the magnetite nanoparticles that coated on the surface of the polysulfone (PSF) support membrane was developed. In the presence of the oscillated external magnetic field, the deposited magnetite nanoparticles that were sensitive to the oscillating external magnetic field could be actuated and removed the humic acid foulants away from the membrane surface. This is an new approach whereby we have combined both the functionality (hydrophilic and negatively charged of the PAA-MNPs colloids that will repelled the same negatively charged humic acid) and mechanical (actuation of the magnetic Fe3O4 on the membrane surface) properties of the magnetite nano-colloids in suppressing the membrane fouling. Firstly, the magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized via co-precipitation methods where the influence of ferric to ferrous mole ratio, nitrogen gas purging, stirring speeds and precipitation agent were investigated.
