Abstract
This exploratory study attempts to assess the student teachers' and nurses' knowledge, attitudes and practices towards healthy eating, in view of the Healthy Eating Campaign (1997) which aims to create awareness, increase knowledge and promote healthy living is still on~going through the contemporary mass media. The healthy eating aspects involved in this research is the understanding of concepts, practices of desired eating habits, modification of diets, maintaineace of the ideal body weight, labelling of food and the preparation of healthy food choices at the eating places. It also aims to ascertain whether there are differences in knowledge, attitudes and practices towards healthy eating among young adults specializing in the field of education and nursing. Besides these, it also determines the various mass media used by the students for information on healthy eating. Five research questions were formulated and a survey was carried out to collect empirical data. A questionnaire was administered on 100 student teachers and 100 student nurses. The findings obtained are as follow: 1. Majority of the student teachers and nurses received information about healthy eating mostly from the television, newspapers and pamphlets. Amongst the mass media, information from the television aided them the most in making food choices. However, most of them chose pamphlets as the source for reference on healthy eating. 11. The student teachers' knowledge towards healthy eating is good with the percentage mean score of78.7 %. The comprehension of the concepts aspect has the highest percentage mean score while the practices of desired eating habits aspect obtained the lowest. 111. The attitudes of the students towards their own health and foods which are detrimental to health, their practices and involvement in healthy eating is generally good and encouraging towards a healthy lifestyle. IV. Generally the students showed high involvement and positive practices towards healthy eating. However, involvement in sports and exercises were less encouraging. Only 40.0 % of them exercised or were involved in sport activities at least three times a week with a minimum duration of 20 - 30 minutes per session. v. There are no significant differences between knowledge, attitudes and practices and the students' field of professional training towards healthy eating. The study concludes that knowledge on healthy eating influenced the student teachers' and nurses' attitudes to reduce unhealthy practices for the achievement of optimum health.
