Abstract
This research aims to identify the differences of ethnic boundary among students in multiethnic school and monoethnic school in Penang Island. The differences of school's environment to ethnic boundary among student have been investigated and various factors of ethnic boundary among students clearly presented. The research also examined the social distances among the students in every school involved. Teachers and administrators role in encourage ethnic relation between students was identified in this research. Choices of action among students whether it has been influenced by the ethnicity or not are also been explained in this research. The factor of ethnic boundary that has been explored in this research includes ethnic identity, culture, the use of Malay language, social distance, teacher and • administrator role and rational choice. The data collecting methods that have been employed in this research are quantitative and qualitative methods. There are 600 of students in Pulau Pinang involved in answering questionnaire and observations. Qualitative methods which are interviews involved 6 focus groups with every group consist of 5 students from every ethnic for each school. There are 12 teachers and 12 administrators have been interviewed during this research. Quantitative data has been analyzed using SPSS version 15.0 for Windows software in order to test the research hypotheses using one-way MANOY A, Chi-Square test and one-way ANOYA. The result shows that there are significant differences in school environment to ethnic boundary among student. The research also found that there are significant differences for the factors of ethnic boundary among student in SKPE, SKMS, SJKC and SJKT. The social distances among student also indicate that there are significant differences among student in every school involve. However, there are no significant differences on teachers and administrators role in encourage ethnic relation among student in SKPE, SKMS, SJKC and SJKT. The research finding also shows that there are significant differences on choice of action whether it has been influenced by ethnicity among student on SKPE, SKMS, SJKC and SJKT. The qualitative data support the quantitative findings. Research findings prove that multiethnic school environment have an impact of thinning the ethnic boundary among students. However, monoethnic school environment does not necessarily thicken the ethnic boundary. The research findings also suggested that teachers and administrators role is important in encourage the ethnic relation and inevitably thinning the ethnic boundary among students from primary schools.
