Abstract
Control of pH is important for many environmental, biological and chemical processes that impact the human lives. Conventional pH meter, using glass electrodes have been widely used for many years due to their high precision and reliability. Glass electrode and litmus paper remain most useful pH sensor. As a matter of fact, the pH reading of litmus paper is not accurate, where the glass electrode is brittle, not good enough for miniaturization and not absolutely precise for strongly basic and acidic media. In order to achieve small size and reliable performance in pH sensing application, a portable simple pH sensor is needed. In this research, designation of pH sensor systems targeting some specification application which require low power, short response time and high precision. The objective of the research work is to fabricate the pH sensor, characterize the geometry dimension for the pH sensor and test the pH sensor. Computer aided drawing (CAD) and pcb design software (DipTrace) is used to design the sensor. Geometry factors are taken in consider in order to design the sensor. The sensor fabrication start with Interdigitated Electrodes (IDE) fabrication design. The fabrication process involves nickel plating, silver plating and gold plating. For the characterization phase, cyclic voltammetry and SEM imaging is used. Keithley 4200 SCS semiconductor characterization system was used to test the pH measurement on the pH sensor.
