dc.description.abstract | This study is based on a demersal fish resources survey conducted in Brunei over a period of one year between 1989 and 1990. The survey area encompassed the waters between the coast and the 100 meter isobath. Sampling was conducted using a Boris-Goshawk trawl net operated from the Research Vessel, "LUMBA-LUMBA".length frequency measurements of Leiognathus splendens, L. bindus and equulus were taken. The data obtained was analysed using the computer programme, ELEFAN (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) . Parameters studied included Loo, K, M, F, Z, E, ARP and ¢', where: Leo= asymptotic length, K = growth constant, M = Natural Mortality Rate, F = Fishing Mortality Rate, Z = Total Mortality Rate, E = Exploitation Rate, ¢' = Phi prime and ARP = Annual Recruitment Pattern. In addition, Relative Yields Per Recruit, Y/R' and Relative Biomass Per Recruit,· B/R', were also analysed. Exponential Decay Models with variable Z values were also computed for the three species. Using the swept-area method, total demersal fish stock biomass was estimated. Potential Yields were computed using the Gulland formula. The family Leiognathidae comprises the largest component in the demersal fish assemblage. The. three Leiognathus species studied are fast growing species. Exploitation Rates for the three species are low at present. The demersal fish stock biomass is also underexploited. There is thus room for expansion of the trawler fleet which has been identified as the primary exploitation system for The demersal fish stocks. Over-exploitation can be avoided by careful monitoring of fish stocks and control of fishing effort. | en_US |
