Abstract
Traffic congestion is the increase of traffic volume at a peak hour on a road with
a limited capacity which causes the vehicles to move slowly. The causes of traffic
congestion identified by transportation experts are namely the increase of human
population, the increase of private vehicles, town activities, weak traffic systems,
habits of drivers, delays and the urban structure. This research was conducted to
study the factors which cause the traffic congestions in 8andaraya Kuching. The
scope covers aspects concerning traffic jams such as demography, socioeconomy,
urban structure and the public transport system. The study was carried
out using methods such as polls and observation. The poll was conducted to
obtain information from respondents in 8andaraya Kuching by using
questionnaires. The condition of the traffic congestion' of the study site by
observation. Secondary data will be used to comprehend relevant the theories
and concepts. The findings show that factors causing the traffic congestion are
due to dependence of private vehicles and urban development towards sprawl as
well as inefficient public transportation.
