dc.description.abstract | Traditional Malay pottery is often referred to as Malay craft that exists due to foreign influences into Malaya, without any relations or connections to the existence of pre-historic pottery. Along·the timeline, there exist a missing link in the Malay pottery especially when the origin of the Malay race was queationed .It seemed that the origin do not coincide with that of the earlier Malay settlers. Furthermore, the modern-day orang asli are not ceramics artisans and do not have skills and talents in making ceramics. However, there are some similarities in the techniques used, the shape, form and motifs with its usage in the past. Hence, this research will try to identify the continuity of both, with support from periodic archeological data, compared to findings from case studies of existing traditional Malay pottery production. At the same time, the research also looks into the means, philosophy ands other mechanisms that are instilled in traditional Malay pottery that have not been exposed yet. The establishment for a new database for shapes, forms and motifs of traditional Malay pottery that has not been. created before will also act as resource pool for researchers in earthenware studies, given the fact that since the traditional Malay pottery production seems to be dying. The findings of this research show that there is indeed continuity in shapes and motifs as well as techniques in producing ceramics that have not changed since pre-historic times. The philosophy behind the creation of olden-day ceramics is laden with civilizations, myths and superstitions that have become normal beliefs and practices once before. There are also case study locations that still hold true to these traditions. Hence this research is very significant as a way-finder to researches in this field. After all, the inheritance of a Malay art form is more important than its creation | en_US |
