Abstract
The aim of this research is to explore the Islamic spiritual leadership
dimension and practices of religious school principals in Southern Thailand. The
specific focus is on the principals' leadership practices in every leadership dimension
according to teachers' perspectives, and to obtain feedbacks regarding the practices
which are of high priority and those which are of lower priority. Questionnaires were
used to obtain data from 360 teachers from 30 public religious schools in three
provinces in Southern Thailand, namely Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Each of these
questionnaires consists of 68 items which were used to measure 9 dimensions of
Islamic spiritual leadership which were based on Al-Quran's guidance, teachers'
attention, consultation practices, devotion to Allah's commands, sense of
responsibility, knowledge and firmness. The total score of corelation items' values
revealed that the items made meaningful contributions towards the development of
each dimension. The analysis of beliefs also revealed the internal persistence item
(Cronbach Alpha) with an acceptable value range of more than 0.92 (Nunnally &
Berstien, 1994). To- identify items which were prioritised with regards to their
practices and those which were not prioritised, the RASCH Measurement Model,
which measures key factors, was also used as the basis for the interviews with the
principals and the teachers. The interviews with 3 principals and 6 teachers reinforced
the dimensions of leadership practices that were of priority and that were often
practised as the top priority was fluency in Qur'anic recitation, followed by
principals guidance of teachers to put Al-Quran 's teachings into practice, the practice
of principals working unanimously with teachers, followed by the practice where
principals sit together in a discussion with teachers. Next, the establishment of basictruth
value in meetings, not to get emotional easily in the meeting, principals
emphasizing the importance of the 5 times-a-day congregational prayers to the
school community, followed by preparing the place for prayers. The next order of
priority was the practice of responsibility toward duty and task followed by
principals being quick and efficient in problem-solving at schools. Next, the practice
of principals pursuing schools' goals, then the principals' efficiency in leading the
schools. Meanwhile, practices by principals which were not given priority were as
follows according to their order: vision of the administration based on the AI-Quran,
requesting people to work diligently according to the teaching of AI-Quran,
developing teacher's personality, followed by cooperating with teachers, next was
monitoring the outcomes of meetings, accepting constructive opinions in meetings,
principals as the leader (imam) in congregational prayers, appreciating teachers who
are committed in their work, giving rewards to teachers based on their performance
and fulfilling one's duty toward his or her teacher. Next was sufficient experience to
lead schools, the society's acceptance of the principals' leadership, firm but gentle
and courteous in his administration. The findings of this research can function as the
basic measurement for Islamic spiritual leadership, especially in the leadership and
management of public religious schools in Southern Thailand. Suggestions based on
the research findings and for further research are also discussed.
