Abstract
George Town is widely known as a heritage city with its unique culture,
heritage buildings and urban surrounding. Its exotic heritage, cultural antiquities,
urban functions, living heritage and environment have been attracting local and
international tourists. The trend of tourist arrivals in Penang has increased
significantly between 6% to 7% each year and until the year 2000, the total
tourists have reached 3.75 million people in the year 2000.
It is expected that the number of tourists visiting the city of Georgetown
will increase and if the State Government's effort to be listed in UNESCO World
Heritage List is achieved. It is important that this issue is taken into consideration
since George Town is now listed amongst the 1 00 endangered sites in the world
as been declared by the United Nations. Therefore, all these heritage buildings
which mostly have reached the age of 1 00 years, are considered as sensitive
and are exposed to destruction if the area receives high number of tourists which
exceeds the area's carrying capacity.
This research examines the local community's perception on the
physical impacts of tourist arrivals in George Town by using a stratified sampling
method. The approach is to identify the physical impacts in six different
conservation zones in order to see the sensitivity impact of each zone. The
analysis will also identify the local's perception on the physical impacts of tourist
arrivals in George Town by using factor analysis method. The outcome of the
study would be beneficial for the government and other related agencies to
conserve and manage the heritage city.
