Studies on the biology of Nymphaea pubescens Willd. and man-made pond ecology were carried out at Lily Pond, Botanical Gardens, Penang and University Science of Malaysia. The effects of culture medium and oxygen (redox potential) on the germination and growth of seeds were I studiep. Results showed that silt loam was suitable bel I cause .of the highest percentage of germination was recordi ed re~ching 100% when the sediment condition was at the E h value-,2 00 - 250 mV. The best alternative for the propaga- ! tion pf N. pubescens was through rhizome (asexual). Based on the results, propagation through rhizome completed the I plant1 life cycle within 235 days as compared to the seed (sexual) propagation which took 250 days. The ecological study on the man-made pond based on the growth of aquatic macrophytes, bathymetric,- - morphometry and water quality indicated that the Lily Pond was in the state of eutrophication. The most dominant aquatic plant species were Cabomba aquatica Aubl. and Nymphaea pubescens Willd. :W1 t~ the areal ~ . coverages of ' XV i'ii ~-~=~ . -...... 137.88.:_52.35 m and 101.96~18.58 m respectively. The highest growth of macrophytes was observed at the depth of 1.0 m. The physico-chemical parameters of the studied pond water were recorded as follows; pH ranged from 6.4 to 7.4; 0 water temperature from 23.8 to 27.0 C; dissolved oxygen (DO) from 5.2 to 10.2 mgjl; alkalinity from 0.341 to 0.710 meq. CaCO /1 and conductivity ranged from 35.0 to 40.5 3 ~mhos/em. The nutrient concentrations were relatively low ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 mgjl for ranged from 0.015 to 0.035 mg/1. PO -P while 4 NH -N 4 The main objective of the study was to investigate the biology of~ pubescens and its aquatic habitat. The ecological balance of man-made pond was essential and also needed to be studied. The~efore, the sustainability . of the ecological balanc~. maintenance and management of I /the man-made pond was conducted. ' Various ecological aspects of the man-made pond was emphasized. It was necessary for the growth of aquatic plants as well as aquascaping.en_US
