Abstract
Taxi drivers among the elderly driver is growing rapidly in Malaysia. Hence, numerous factors should be taken into account to ensure that the elderly taxi drivers can do their job well and in good health. This research aims for design product to minimize musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) at lower back of elderly taxis drivers. Mixed method was used in this study with a cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Purposive sampling method was used based on inclusive criteria; age 60 years old and above, self-driving taxi more than 1 year, no disabilities and registered with Land Public Transport Commission (LPTC). A total of 443 respondents participated in the study. Most of elderly taxi driver used a ‘hired’ car (76.7%). More than half of respondents experience back pain in the past 12 months and 67.5% in the last seven days. High mismatch was found between current seat design and human size dimension. There was a significant relationship (p< 0.05) between BMI, smoking status, driving until mid-night, experiencing back pain for the last 12 months and last seven days with discomfort of limbs on seat design. A new design and dimension was proposed. The results of the pre-prototype and 3D simulation of the proposed design found that RULA score drops at two action levels (low risk) compared to the conventional designs. Field tests used EMG method prove that the proposed solution decreases muscle activity and energy usage, minimized MSDs as well as lower back pain injuries. The objective of this study was achieved with the proposed design and new parameters which combines medical science and industrial design.
