Abstract
Pharmaceutical Care (PC) is the contribution of pharmacists to the care of individuals to optimise medicine use and to improve health outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify the impact and effectiveness of ambulatory care clinical pharmacist intervention on the management and overall quality of life (QoL) of diabetic patients, along with the assessment of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) of physicians and pharmacists regarding diabetes mellitus and PC. Two cross-sectional studies were conducted in the Ambulatory Care Department of King Abdul Aziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, involving physicians and pharmacists. A KAP questionnaire was completed by pharmacists and physicians before and after the educational sessions given by the clinical pharmacist. SF36 questionnaire was used to explore the experiences of the patients who were cared for by the ambulatory care clinical pharmacist. Diabetic patients showed significant improvements in their QoL in terms of general health, energy and fatigue, pain scores, and social, emotional and physical functions. Moreover, PC was found to have a significant impact on diabetes related QoL along with various outcome indicators, such as glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), random blood sugar and lipid profile in such patients. Additionally, satisfactory knowledge, a positive attitude towards PC and good practice in identifying prescription errors were found among pharmacists.
