dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research project is to simulate, design and build an Active power Factor Correction (APFC) equipment of Boost-type converter, as a power factor improved rectifier in enhancing the mains power quality as referring to the international standard IEC 61000-3-2 in harmonic limits. Rectifiers that consist of diode-capacitor arrangements are widely implemented inside Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Battery Chargers and others. They are well identified as the cause of low power factor to the mains AC supply and significantly introduce to large amount of Total Harmonic Distortion (THO) due to non-linearity of the input current with respect to the sinusoidal input voltage. The popular Boost-type converter method is used in this project as the main power factor control function and a suitable electronics circuit is built as the controller to the converter. The objective is to . ensure continuous flow of current during the nonconduction period and makes the input current to imitate similarly the sinusoidal input voltage waveform. Simulation of the project methodology and control strategy was done using computer aided tool, PSIM (Ver 4.1). By implementing this aid, analysiS of the overall system performance and efficiency were determined and taken into consideration during designing stage of the prototype unit. A prototype unit of this power factor improved rectifier was developed to realize the feasibility of the project, with specifications of the input voltage of 240VAC and maximum output power of 300W. The actual test performance results taken were then compared with simulation to verify the designed rectifier conforming to IEC 61000-3-2 standard in current harmonic limits. From the performance data. the designed rectifier passed the lEe 61000-3-2 standard with test loads of 140.7W until300W.en_US
