Abstract
After reviewing the existing literature on Q-method it was found that this method has
not been used in the field of substance abuse treatment. Hence this is the first study
that utilizes the Q method to identify addict’s perception when they are undergoing
substance abuse treatment program. In this study context those who are undergoing
naltrexone treatment program.
It is important as researchers to understand the perception of drug users towards their
treatment. Often researchers in the field of substance abuse are confronted with the
difficulty of quantifying subjective data. There are no appropriate instruments to
measure subjective perception of drug users especially towards their treatment. Q
method is a method that quantifies subjectivity. This method is from self-theory,
which is based on the phenomenological approach.
The study design is a cross-sectional survey. A total of 156 subjects were selected for
this study. The samples were divided into two groups, institution (101 subjects) and
community (55 subjects). Sampling technique used in this study was the simple
random sampling method. A pilot study was carried out to test this method and it can be concluded that the instrument in the pilot study showed moderate reliability (60%).
Some modifications were made for the actual study.
Two objectives put forward in this study were one to determine the usability of this
instrument among drug users in Malaysia. Two tests were carried out to determine
this. The composite reliability test (composite reliability score close to 1) and the
correlation between factors analysis (inter-factor correlation from .125 to 1.0) showed
that the reliability of this instrument was high.
The second objective of using this instrument was to determine if this method could
be used to identify the perception of drug users undergoing naltrexone treatment in
Malaysia. To answer this objective, factor analysis was done. Subjects identified six
factors as their perception. The six factors are motivation, craving, abstinence, selfcontrol,
individual responsibility and naltrexone treatment. All these six factors
identified by subjects as their perception are important factors in the process of
substance abuse treatment. In addition, this method was also used to look at outcome
of subjects undergoing naltrexone treatment based on the compliance towards
medication and counseling. It is found that subjects in the institution showed a better
compliance rate compared to subjects in the community.
Finally, it can be concluded that this method, which has never been used in the field
of substance abuse treatment, is reliable and is able to identify perception of ex-heroin
addicts undergoing naltrexone treatment in Malaysia.
