Abstract
This study intended on the assessment of road traffic noise in Sekolah
Kebangsaan Sungai Bakap where this study area located near the main road Jalan
Sungai Bakap (Route 1). The objectives of this study were to determine noise levels
during school hours (8.30 a.m to 12.00 p.m), to identify the source of noise using sound
level meter (SLM) and to establish noise mapping in the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai
Bakap environment. With using sound level meter (SLM) instrument, the noise levels
at school were measured where 19 points were randomly selected at school area in
order to collect the value of all parameters measured in this study (Leq, Lmax, Lmin, L10,
L50, and L90). Each of the noise measurements was taken for three (3) minutes in
duration and the time is taken for all measurements conducted from 8.30 a.m to 12.00
p.m. Noise mapping performed using ArcMap and My maps website based on the
latitude, longitude and also noise parameters. Manual traffic count was conducted to
count the number of vehicles on the road. Traffic composition data in this study is
categorized into four types, which are passenger car and van, motorcycle, medium
lorries and heavy lorries according to the Arahan Teknik Jalan (8/86), A Guide on
Geometric Design of Roads, 1986 under Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) where the findings
show that increasing numbers of vehicles are increasingly high in noise. The result
showed that the measured noise levels at school area in term of Leq between the ranged
of 54.8 dB(A) to 72.9 dB(A) respectively where it was found that most of the data
collected had highest value of noise level located in road zones. From this study, all
noise data collected are exceeded by the planning guidelines for environmental noise
limits and control under the Malaysian Department of Environment. Apart from that,
based on the noise map, it showed that highest noise levels were located in traffic zones areas.
