dc.description.abstractEcotourism industry in Malaysia has vast potential for further development. The importance of sustainable ecotourism can contribute to both conservation and development and involves as a minimum, positive relationship between tourism, ecological system and local people, facilitated by appropriate management and understanding of developmentconcept at the planning stage. All ecotourism sites must be planned, guided and developed in a monitored and controlled manner for effective and efficient management. Effective and efficient planning and management are necessary to ensure that the projects are feasible on a sustainable tourism basis. The consequence of bad understanding at planning and design aspect will cause contradicted implementation of ecotourism development concept that respect local cultural, local involvement and resource management. Jerejak Resort & Spa, located at Jerejak Island near to Penang Island. Its unique location has evolved into an eco-friendly resort with emphasis on nature and environment presentation. Nevertheless, activities at Jerejak are not totally environmental friendly, for as long as there is human contact with nature, effects are present. This study aims to evaluate ecotourism development with Jerejak Resort & Spa as the case study. The effectiveness of the developer's ecotourism principal implementation will ensure sustainability of environment. These evaluation using three criteria that are relate to a sustainable tourism basis, which are planning and design aspect, involvement of local people and management resource and facilities. The finding shows that there is a contradiction understanding at planning stage, whereby the local cultural and educational elements are not implemented. The ecotourism development is supposed to protect the nature from ruin by implementing a thorough and comprehensive of planning and design system. Moreover human attitude is play an important rule in preserving the heritage of nature.en_US
