dc.description.abstractThe aim of English language curriculum that has been laid out by the Ministry of Education is to enable the students to have effective communication, read and respond to the text independently, produce well-structured written texts, and for the students to enjoy and respond to literary works from different periods and cultures. At secondary level of English language curriculum, English literature plays two distinct roles and they are English literature component, as incorporated in the classroom learning and Literature in English. English literature component is a part of the national curricular syllabus that is learned during English language period and Form Four students will be tested in their final examinations and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) when they are in Form Five. The aims of English literature component as outlined by the MoE (2009) are to improve the students' proficiency through reading, response to texts, understand and appreciate other cultures and relate events and characters to own life. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the intercultural elements of one of the short stories in English literature component and another Malaysian English literary text to compare, which text promotes intercultural elements better, hence, be best used to promote intercultural competence. The study focuses on one of the short stories in Form Four English literature component titled 'Tanjung Rhu’ and another MELT from Ripples titled 'Deep fried devils.' Qualitative content analysis is used as the research method in this study and Atlas.ti 7.0 version software is used to analyse the data from both MELTs. Adding to that, Checklist for selecting and evaluating Malaysian English literary Text (MELT) by Harper and Brand (2010) is used as a guideline to evaluate the intercultural elements in the MELTs. The MELT that promotes better intercultural elements, which is Deep fried devils should be considered to be used as part of English literature component in next text selection cycle or as an intercultural reading material for Form Four students in order to develop their intercultural competence.en_US
