Abstract
The quality of housing in terms of design is important to high-rise low-cost housing residents with high population density. The aim of the National Housing Policy (DRN) is to provide affordable and quality housing to meet the needs, comfort and well-being of housing residents in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to study residents’ satisfaction on the quality of the design of high-rise low-cost housing in Penang. The design of the study is a mixed method of collecting data simultaneously using qualitative and quantitative methods to achieve the objectives of this study. The study involved 345 residents of three high-rise low-cost housing units in Penang, namely Ampang Jajar TAJ Park in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), Halaman Kenanga residence (HK) in Timur Laut District (DTL) and Idaman Seroja (IS) residence in Barat Daya District (DBD). The questionnaires were given to households (n = 345) and were used for the quantitative section, while the case study used interview method with the architects (n = 3) and households (n = 9) from all three housings for the qualitative section. Quantitative data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlations, and ANOVA. Qualitative data was analyzed by using content analysis from the pictures, interviews, and documents. The findings of this study contribute to improve the housing guidelines and standards as well as a combination of housing theories and satisfaction studies of high-rise low-cost housing in Malaysia.
