dc.description.abstract | Pistia stratiotes L. has been selected for the project due to its potential in absorbing phosphorus (P). Therefore, this &.tudy was conducted to determine the ability of Pistia stratiotes to absorb P at concentrations 0.25 mg/1, 0.50 mg/1, 0.75 mg/1 and 1.0 mg/1 respectively. The absorption rate for different P concentrations was carried out for 10 days. The remaining P concentrations were analyzed based on the ascorbic acid method. Results showed that the highest P absorption at initial concentration 0.25 mg/1 was 54%. Whilst, the lowest P absorption rate after 10 days was recorded at initial concentration 0.75 mg/1. To determine the effect of pH towards orthophosphate absorption, the experiment was carried out using 0.25 mg/1 concentration with different.pK ranges from pH 2 to pH 6. The highest percentage of orthophosphate absorption was 44% in pH 5 solution. The lowest percentage of absorption was 30% in pH 2 solution. Based on the highest percentage of orthophosphate absorption in acidic condition, pH 5 was selected for further studies. Results showed that 46% of orthophosphate was absorbed after six days. P concentration in roots and leaves showed significant difference from day two to day· ten (P<0.05). Concentration of P in the roots after 10 days was 52.589 ~ 0. 739 1-Jg g· 1 which was the highest value for the initial concentration of 1.0 mg/1. Concentration of P for the leaves after 10 days was 27.370 ~ 1.294 1-Jg g·1 which was the highest value for the initial concentration of 0.75 mg/1. For pH 5 solution, P concentration for. roots (9.522 ~ 0.169 1-Jg g-1) and leaves (5.957 ~ 0.153 0g g-1) was highest on the first day. Initial concentration of 1.0 mg/1 showed the highest relative· growth rate (RGR) of 0.042 ~ 0.0004 g g-1 day-1 . The histological studies carried out indicated that xylem and phloem are the parts of plants involved in P translocation. | en_US |
