Abstract
A pedestrian area is a part of an urban zone that contains a myriad of human
activity and separated from the vehicle track. A city is defined as a highly
concentrated human population centre due to job opportunities, residential area,
education and et cetera. The fast development of a city based on imprecise plans
would trigger conflicts between pedestrian and motored vehicle. Therefore, while
planning, designing and constructing the pedestrian area, a lot of factors need to
be emphasized, such as security, facility and comfort in order that the area can
function efficiently. Moreover, a good integration between public transport and
the pedestrian area can decrease total dependent on the usage of motored
vehicle and it can also decrease pollution. This survey was designed to
measurement the effectiveness of pedestrian area in George Town towards a
pedestrian friendly city. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the pedestrian
area are made based on the criteria determined by the analyst used observation
method and with survey/census method for other information such as
respondents demographic characteristics, user aspects and pedestrian network,
general perception and user scale on their satisfaction with pedestrian facilities
are also taken into account. A total of 200 respondents over the age of 16 were
conducted. In the final findings, it is found that the research area still has
potential to become a pedestrian friendly city although there are several
weaknesses that need to be improved. The guidelines on pedestrian area
designs are also suggested for reference in future projects.
