The aim of this study is to establish how the development of a mother-training module and training mothers will enable mothers to inculcate problem-solving skills in children aged three. The objectives of this study are to develop a mother-training module incorporating problem-solving skills of sorting, classifying, sequencing, recognizing, matching, and decision making; to investigate how mothers could be trained to implement the activities in the module; and to make suggestions to enhance the application of the skills so the study will be beneficial to all mothers at large, individuals and educators interested in early childhood education. Theoretically, the study is based mainly on Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory and Vygotsky’s Socio- Cultural Theory and Zone of Proximal Development. The study employs a qualitative holistic multiple case study approach involving five Malay mothers with children aged three years old residing in the vicinity of Sungai Petani, Kedah Darul Aman. The study mainly uses interviews, complemented by observation, and field notes to collect the data. The findings show the need for the development of a mother-training module; that the training of mothers and implementation of the module have brought positive changes in young children; that the module, activity materials and implementation were suitable for every mother and early learner. One of the implications of the study is that the development of the mother-training module incorporating problem-solving activities and its implementation will help every mother to nurture the skills as an excellent ‘head start’ before entering preschool. Mother-training also opens up untouched grey areas in early childhood education that should broaden the scope of research dealing with children whose early years are confined to the house.en_US
