Abstract
This project aims to model and simulate Automatic Generation Control (AGC) in the power system which consists of two equal interconnected hydro and thermal generating area, considering Generation Rate Constraint (GRC) and reheat turbine. The performance of the automatic generation control using different type of controllers is simulated and examined with a 1% step load perturbation (SLP) at the thermal generating area. The controllers being used in this project in order to perform automatic generation control are the combinations of the conventional P-I-D controllers and the combination of PID controller and Artificial Intelligence Fuzzy controller, namely Fuzzy PID controller. Artificial Intelligence controllers are being included in the study of AGC nowadays because as the system complexity increases, the performance of the conventional controllers tends to deteriorate but Artificial Intelligence controllers outperform conventional controllers in this situation. Therefore, this project aims to model the hydro and thermal power system and obtained the optimized performance by the controllers. The gains and parameter of the controllers are optimized using Integral Square Error (ISE) technique and the dynamic responses of the controllers at their optimal performance are determined and compared. From the simulation result of the AGC, it is observed that Fuzzy PID controller has better overall dynamic performance and transient response as much as 25.29% in terms of the performance index compared to the conventional PID controllers.
