The personal computer has penetrated into the lives of today's society and has largely contributed to every activity of the individual, be it at work, personal productivity, entertainment or communication. Nevertheless, its adoption is not as widespread and has not reached the anticipated level of usage in Malaysian society. This was because of the existence of resistance to try new things apart from other reasons. Hence, this study looks into the factors which influence the decision to adopt or reject the personal computer by individuals of various ages and various socioeconomic levels. The sample in this study comprised of 142 individuals residing in three residential areas in Penang. The Innovation-Decision Model from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory is used to identify the factors which influence the adoption of personal computers. The analysis in the study found that there was a difference between male and female respondents and a difference between the younger age group and the older age group in their adoption of personal computers. Social status factor showed a difference between higher level of education and lower level of education and a difference between higher income level and lower income level in the adoption of personal computers. Factors such as attitudes toward the attributes of the personal computer, principles knowledge and 'how-to' knowledge were also found to be significant factors which influenced the adoption of personal computers.en_US
