In our contemporary society, it is generally accepted that to have a developed society and a stable economy, environmental pollution is inevitable. Subsequently, the environmental crisis is viewed as a natural outcome in order to achieve ‘development’ and ‘progress’ in all aspects of human life. Thus results the encouragement from various parties to embrace 'science' due to its ability to produce 'modern' technology which will bring about development and advancement to society. This understanding has impacted various sectors such as the education systems and the industrial and economic sectors. Although there are many who are concerned over the worsening environment, they however, continue to subscribe to the belief that the goals and achievements towards 'development', 'progress', 'science’, and 'modern' life should not be neglected in spite of major environmental damage. This dilemma has raised serious concerns regarding the question of how to deal with the environmental crisis, thus compelling this research to study the philosophy of Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a prominent contemporary Muslim philosopher. This study examines Nasr’s diagnosis of the causes of the environmental crisis and the ways to resolve them. For Nasr, the environmental crisis is caused by humanity’s spiritual crisis. The human crisis has to be addressed in order to resolve the environmental crisis. There are a number of keywords stressed by Nasr that require an in-depth study of their thematic and semantic meanings in order to understand his environmental philosophy, as contained in his important writings such as The xv Encounter of Man and Nature: The Spiritual Crisis of Modern Man (1968) and Religion and the Order of Nature (1996). Based upon the method described by Toshihiko Izutsu (d. 1993), a Japanese scholar of philosophy of language, this study uses the method of semantic analysis which employs the ‘basic meaning’ and ‘relational meaning’ techniques. The result of the study found that terms such as ‘development’, ‘progress’, ‘science’ and ‘modern’ have been distinctively described by Nasr which are different from the general understanding of these terms in present day society. Nasr describes the real meaning of the keywords in negative form, that is, not in harmony with nature, and views it as a problem of worldview. Nasr himself defines the term ‘environment’ as ‘desacralised nature' or 'polluted nature'. The findings show that people are often in a dilemma when dealing with the environmental crisis, resulting from their tacit acceptance of the modern secular worldview. This study is important in bringing back the question of epistemology, which will have implications in relation to educational policy, law, and the position of religion in understanding Nature and her rights.en_US
