Iban proverbs highlight the ethical values that make up their lives. The ethical values found in the Iban proverbs show that the Iban community has always emphasized good behavior and noble identity in shaping community with high human values. In this regard, this study aims to explore the theory of prima facie duties introduced by William David Ross (1930) and use the theory to analyze several selected Iban proverbs. The selected proverbs in this study was collected from the book entitled Jaku’ Dalam (2009). The results showed that Iban proverbs display some prima facie duty to keep promises (fidelity); to constantly fixing mistakes made in the past (reparation); to be fair to one another when making decisions (justice); to do as much good as possible without considering the motive for the action (beneficence); to constantly improve one’s own weaknesses in terms of intellectual and personal values (self-improvement); not to harm others (non-maleficence) and lastly to be grateful and thankful (gratitude). In conclusion, Iban proverbs emphasize ethical values that reflect the beauty of their culture as a society that values collective well-being as a harmonious and holistic community as well as a community of noble individuals.en_US
