Abstract
Recently, rapid development and urbanisation have contributed drastically
towards sand mining activities. These activities have a great impact on river cross section
and morphology. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a sediment transport assessment
to test the stability of the current rivers. In this thesis, the sediment transport assessment
is carried out for Sungai Kurau and Sungai Kulim. This thesis presents a study on
sediment rating curve which includes a comparison of the present study with previous
study data and assessment of Yang equation and Engelund-Hansen equations. This thesis
also contains study on river cross section, bed load rate, suspended load rate and total
bed material load. Sediment transport is the movement of particles in different modes
along the flow direction when flow characteristics such as velocity exceeded the
threshold condition for the bed material in an alluvial channel. To carry out this
assessment, 18 samples are collected for Sungai Kurau and 3 samples are collected for
Sungai Kulim. Through the analysis, it is found that, Yang and Engelund-Hansen
equation is suitable to predict the sediment transport for both rivers. However, Yang
equation is more accurate to predict the sediment transport for both sites. It is also found
that Sungai Kurau is still in stable condition when compared with previous study (DID,
2009) based on a sediment rating curve. However, Sungai Kulim is slightly less stable
since there is slight significant changes when compared with previous data (DID, 2009
and DID, 1999).
