Abstract
The thesis is concerned with drug addiction among Chinese and Indian youths aged
8 to 27 years in the state of Penang, Malaysia. A review of available literature is
as wen as relevant sociological theories. A theoretical model is developed
from these theories to provide a sensitising framework for the data collection. Ninety-six
males were interviewed over a five month period using semi-structured, open-ended
questions. Respondents were selected equally from two racial groups, Chinese and
Indian. A sample of addicts receiving treatment in rehabilitation institutions (40) was
drawn from public and private centers both on Penang Island and the Mainland. A second
sample of street addicts (25) was drawn from streets in the Penang Island. A third sample
of non-addicts (31) was selected to match the first and second samples in tenns of age
distribution, ethnicity and socio-demographic characteristics. A random selection
procedure was used with the institutional sample and snowball sampling with the street
addicts. Interview responses were coded and descriptive quantitative analysis undertaken.
The analysis leads to the conclusion that peer influence is the major factor contributing
initiaUy to drug use and eventually to addiction. Other factors studied, including primary ,
socialization, experience of personal problems, use of cigarettes and alcoho( and
perceptions of drug-related laws, appear to be of little importance.
