Abstract
Thirteen species of rattan were recorded in an established field plots (5 ha) within the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve, Lumut, Perak. Dominant species is Calamus castaneus (rotan cucor) which found in all low laying plots. Young shoots of selected ratan species from two main genus (Le Daemonorops and Calamus) have been collected and currently preserved in School of Biology Biotechnology lab for DNA extractions. In effort of assessing the effectiveness of DNA barcoding identification of the rattan species of the Arecaceae, the two DNA marker namely matK and rbcL is amplify using the standardize pcr protocol and primer set. It was found that, the relative amplification success of rbcL marker is higher than matK marker.
