- ItemHow does nutrient and sediment loading affect estuarine ecosystem.(2016)Yahya, KhairunThe Pinang River estuary is classified as a microtidal, primary and partly-mixed system where approximately 6.5 km of the estuary experiences tidal intrusion from the mouth up to its middle zone. Results from bathymetry and hydrodynamic studies indicate that, Pinang River is a shallow river, with a depth of 0.18-2.10 m (at low tide) and 0.41-3.03 m (at high tide) During the lowest spring tide, the width of the river is about 5.9-80.0 m widen to 5.9-121.0 m during the highest level of spring tide.
- ItemFundamental investigation on the attraction behavior of household ants to caffeine in coffee.(2016)Ab Majid, Abdul HafizFrom the field sampling, the most dominant household ants are P. longicornis (22.09%), T. indicum (17.74%), T. melanocephalum (17.00/0), M. pharaonis (10.61%), and Pheidole spp. (5.22%). Extracts from Arabical Robusta and Liberica coffee showed an influence on the behavior of Tapinoma indicum (TI), Monomorium pharaonis (MP) and Solenopsis geminata (SG) workers, but the clearest effect was seen with Arabica in olfactory bioassay.
- ItemSpatial distribution of Rattan (Arecaceae, Subfamily: Calamoideae) In Northern Ecoregion: Genetic diversity and population differentiation.(2015)Mansor, AsyrafThirteen species of rattan were recorded in an established field plots (5 ha) within the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve, Lumut, Perak. Dominant species is Calamus castaneus (rotan cucor) which found in all low laying plots. Young shoots of selected ratan species from two main genus (Le Daemonorops and Calamus) have been collected and currently preserved in School of Biology Biotechnology lab for DNA extractions. In effort of assessing the effectiveness of DNA barcoding identification of the rattan species of the Arecaceae, the two DNA marker namely matK and rbcL is amplify using the standardize pcr protocol and primer set. It was found that, the relative amplification success of rbcL marker is higher than matK marker.
- ItemBaiting strategies against urban pest ants.(2009)Chow Yang, LeeABSTRACT An evaluation of severa] insecticides, namely, 0.01% fipronil, 0.0.5% indoxacarb, and 2% boric acid in liquid bait formulations were carried out against field populations of the longlegged ant, Anoplolepis gracili.pes (Fr. Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
- ItemIn Vitro culture techniques for mass production of fruit trees and ornamental plants.(2010)Lai Keng, ChanThis project was funded by UPEN Kelantan with a total of RM 500,000.00 under the Malaysian Government Biotechnology Satellite Program with a duration of three years starting from 1 August 2006 - 30 July 2009. The agreement (MoA) was signed between USM and UPEN Kelantan on 3 August 2006 for the research team to carry out project involves in mass production of banana seedlings and other ornamental plant species of the Araceae Family using the tissue culture techniques.
