dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the Transactional Presence (TP) and student learning. The TP refers to the degree to which a distance student senses the availability of, and connectedness with, people in his/her education setting (Shin, 2003). The TP consists of three dimensions namely lecturer TP, peer student TP and institutional TP. Student learning consists of three dimensions namely learning satisfaction, learning achievement and learning persistence. The relationship was studied based on demographic factors of regional centre, gender, academic programmes and ethnicity. The conceptual framework used in this study was based on TP concept of Shin (2002a) and student learning model of Gibson (1991). A quantitative approach was used and conducted on 615 second-year students of the School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia enrolled in the 2006/2007 academic session. The findings reveal that institutional TP is related to all the student learning variables. While lecturer TP is significantly related to learning satisfaction and learning achievement; and the effect of student peer TP is only related to learning satisfaction. This research partially supports Shin (2003) findings. The investigation of demographic factors on TP and student learning support the TP concept of Shin (2002) and student learning of Gibson (1991). This study indicates the importance of demographic factors of gender, academic programmes and ethnicity which can be significantly related to TP dimensions and student learning dimensions. In particular, the academic programmes is a factor which is related to all of the dimensions of TP and dimensions of student learning. Distance learning institutions must consider the demographic factors when determining TP and the effect on student learning. | en_US |
