Abstract
Hikayat Keturunan Raja Negeri Deli (King of Deli's Atmals) is a Malay literary text
were written in the form of narrative prose that can be regarded as a literature genre
for the Sultanate of Deli. Most of its story depicted Gocah Pahlawan an Achehnese
General as the founder of the Deli Royal House. This literary work desGribed how a
common noble can be able to challenge a ruling King. However, the historical value
of this literary work is pretty vague due to the fact that it was been mixed up with
local folklore. This has made this work to be more to a pseudo-historical writing. The
study of this text will depart for the research framework of oral historical thought as
proposed by Jan Vansina in his book, Oral Tradition: A Study in Historical
Methodology. This research will attempt to discuss the position of Gocah Pahlawan
as a legend for the Sultanate of Deli that covers from his origin, bravery, leadership,
loyalty, and extraordinary attributes. The manuscripts of Hikayat Keturunan Raja
Deli will pot ray a continuous role played by old literary work in order to create a
legend for a community until today.
