Abstract
This dissertation focuses on these two art fonns practiced from the 1950s up to the year 2000. Batik painting has been with us since the 1950s, practiced by Chuah Thean Teng, Patrick Ng Kah Onn, Khalil Ibrahim, Tay Mo Leong and Ida Ruth Talalla.'Batik Painting' and 'Painting Batik' may seem like a play of words but actually signify stark differences. To redo batik images on canvases or to paint using the batik technique has become an intriguing issue in modern Malaysian art that has, however, generated less than enthusiastic attention. The researcher is therefore exploring it here as a theme. One important source of reference is the bulk of exhibition catalogues on batik issued from the period. The different ways of presentation and the applications of ~echniques are studied. The existence of two groups of artistsĀ· who record the beauty in their respective works plotted their progress is also being studied. Works identified as 'batik painting' and 'painting batik' in their presentations and techniques are studied. Artworks characterized as 'batik painting' and 'painting batik' often seen as synonym have to be differentiated. This qualitative study is based on the review of exhibition catalogs, official records, and the artworks themselves. Much infonnation is gleaned from interviews with selected artists, five of whom represent the school of 'batik painting'(name the artists) and the other five that of 'painting batik' (name the artists). It is hoped that this interpretative study will help define the meanings of 'batik painting' and 'painting batik' much more robustly, identify their practitioners, and nuanced the diffe~ences between the two in the evolution of modern art of Malaysia.
