This study aimed to investigate the effect of group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and group interpersonal therapy (IPT) on depression among diabetic patients in Iran. In this study, techniques and theories for each module were used separately. In CBT, two theories, namely cognitive and behavioural theories, and two techniques, namely cognitive restructuring and self-monitoring techniques were used. In IPT, two techniques, namely relationship and communication analysis, and two theories, namely Attachment Theory and Social Theory were used. The sample was divided into six groups: three CBT groups (G1, G2, and G3) and three IPT groups (G4, G5, G6) that consist of male, female and mixed gender groups. Each group consisted of 8 patients who received the cognitive behaviour therapy and group interpersonal therapy interventions. This study is a quasi-experimental study in the form of time series. The sample including 48 patients from the West of Iran in the 26-60 age range was selected from 160 patients using a purposive sampling. The treatment was implemented within 90-minutes sessions once a week. The subjects were tested three times after the fourth session (PT1), the eighth session (PT2), and the twelfth session (PT3) using the Beck Depression Inventory. The gathered data were then analysed using a non-parametric statistics including: Fried man, Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests; whereas normal distribution variables were presented as mean ± standard deviation. The results of the statistical analyses indicated that the symptoms of depression of the subjects in CBT (G1, G2 and G3) groups, in IPT (G4, G5 and G6) groups significantly decreased after receiving the intervention sessions. The difference between these means is significant, at p-value <0.05, among all group program interventions. The result showed that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) mixed gender is more effective than other groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that the group counselling based on the approaches, namely cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) are effective in decreasing depression among diabetic patients. It can also be concluded that CBT program is more effective than IPT program. It is finally concluded that group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and group interpersonal therapy (IPT) counselling approach are effective in decreasing depression of diabetic patients in the 26-60 age range in Iran.en_US
