Abstract
On 12 October 2002, the world was shaken by a terrible tragedy, the bombing of Paddy's Bar and Sari Club in Kuta, Bali. Many believed that the tragedy was not an isolated case, linking it to the Al-Qaeda network led by Osama bin Laden. He was previously accused to be responsible for the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The Bali blast tragedy was selected as a case study based on the regional ties that exist between Malaysia and Indonesia as members of ASEAN, and as 'islamic countries in particular. Moreover, a few of the Jemaah Islamiah members accused as perpetrators of the blast were believing to have a clostie's with few Malaysians who were suspected.to be also involved. Using TV3 as the case study, this research aimed to analyzed how their journalists from the foreign news department framed: the tragedy and identified the type of frames employed in the reporting and determined the factors influencing the manner TV3 journalists framed the tragedy analysing the process involved in the production of foreign news bulletin specifically in Buletin Utama. The frame analysis approach was utilised to examine how TV3 journalists created meaning in their news reporting. The 54 prime news bulletin on the Bali blast tragedy from 14 October to 13 November 2002 were analyzed. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with TV3 journalists and editors directly involved in the Bali blast news reporting. The findings of the study revealed that the TV3 journalists did not developed the frames in a vacuum consistent with the government policy of reporting heinous crime such as terrorism. An analysis on the news production revealed that the journalists' were greatly influenced by four factor such as the roles of journalists and editors, organizational factors, and extramedia. In spite of the four media frames development such as terrorism frame: world problem; legal frame: innocent until proven guilty; economic frame: national security and well-being; human interest frame, the TV3 journalists were believed to be ideologically driven by these factors. The reporting of Bali blast revealed that TV3, as a local Tv station, not only inform the audience on issues or events but also play a role in defending the image of Islam in line with government's ideology.
