Abstract
At the work place, employees are expected to voice their opinions due to many reasons. Researchers often defined employee voice as the process where employees raise their concerns, express their interests, solve problems and contribute and participate in the decision making process. In the modern work environment, as many companies are going for latest mode of working environment such as self-work team, telecommuting and performance oriented output, employees now are detached from the structure. In this context of new working enviroment, the roles of voices are even more important because it will be the coordination tools to manage the employees. Thus, the present study investigates the antecedents and outcomes of promotive voice and prohibitive voice among technical knowledge workers in manufacturing industry. The main objective is to analyse the relationship between trustworthiness (ability, benevolence and integrity) of supervisor and psychological safety influence to the promotive voice and prohibitive voice. In addition, the study also analyse the relationship between both voices and outcomes of intention to quit and job satisfaction. Questionnaires containing previous measures as proposed by previous researchers was developed and sent to the respondents from the selected manufacturing companies in the northern states, Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Perak. Data from the respective respondents were used to test the research model. From 800 questionnaires sent, only 210 responses received and analyzed. Then, by using SPSS, data are cleaned and later regression technique is conducted to test the hypotheses. Overall, the study revealed that out of 12 hypotheses, 7 hypotheses are accepted. Specifically, benevolence of supervisor and integrity of supervisor have been found highly significant positive to promotive and prohibitive voice. Psychological safety has been found significant positive to prohibitive voice. Promotive voice has been found significant negative to intention to quit. This study also confirms that promotive voice has a significant and positive relationship with job satisfaction. In conclusion, the result of this study provides a clear picture about the roles of voices towards the outcomes of work such as job satsfaction and intention to quit. Similiar to other studies, this study is also subjected to certain limitations. Since this study only focus on technical knowledge workers in manufacturing industry, the findings might not be applicable to other work setting. Therefore, this study proposed that in future, the research setting can be enlarged.
