The aim of this study was to identify the relationship of family factors on the reading habits and interest among level two pupils of National Type Tamil Schools. The family factors analysed in this study were family income, parents’ education level, parents’ occupation, parents’ encouragement to read and home reading environment. Two methods of data collection were employed, namely quantitative method and qualitative study. In quantitative method, a questionnaire consisting of 48 questions was utilized as the survey instrument. A total of 275 Level 2 primary school pupils participated in the survey. Interview technique was used in the qualitative approach. Nine pupils participated in the face-to-face interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS Version 14.0 Programme for Windows. The statistical analysis used were the t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Spearmen’s Correlation, and Pearson Correlation. Survey results revealed that there was no significant difference in reading habit and interest based on family income. However, results from correlation tests indicated significant relationships between pupils’ reading habits and interest and parents’ level of education, parents’ encouragement and home reading environment. The statistical analysis further indicated a significant difference in pupils reading habit and interest based on fathers’ occupation. The findings from interviews complement the data procured from the questionnaire analysis. The research established that family factors positively influence pupils reading habits and interest.en_US
