| dc.description.abstract | Mecistocirrus digitatus (von Linstow, 1906) Railliet and Henry, 1912, is a commonly occuring helminth parasite in cattle, causing gastro-enteri t1 s. .. The parasite has not been previously described in Malaysia, and few studies have been done on the bionomies of the preparasitie stages. In the present studies, the worm is identified; its incidence as seen in the slaughterhouse is recorded over a two year period; and the effect of temperature on hatching, am rate of development, as well as the morphology of the preparasitic stages are studied. The worm in Peninsular Malaysia is !i• digitatus though the dorsal· lobe of the male bursa is bilobed. The incidence of the worm in slaughtered cattle is 8.8% and in buffaloes is 0.5%. Sheep and goats are not infected. Infection is related to breed and age. Hatching and the rate of developmed: occur rli within a narrow range of temperatures (20° to 35°C). The survival of the preparasitic stages is also poor outside this range. The infective stage is easily recognisable because of its very short tail, the presence of a pair of dark brown granules at the anterior end and a second inner cuticle within the ensheathed larva. Experimental infections were successfully established in calves but not in the mousedeer, rabbits and mice. Adult male and female worms were recovered from the abomasum. | en_US |
