Abstract
Photovoltaic is becoming increasingly popular, as environment friendly renewable energy source due to it able produces no pollution and requires minimal maintenance. There are a lot of types of PV panels and these panel behave differently in different climates and operating conditions. While monitoring system for PV performance are available, there are usually expensive. This project involved design and implementation solar photovoltaic monitoring system using microcontroller. The solar monitoring system will be used to monitor the HIT PV panel performance under different operating conditions in Malaysian tropical weather climate. This project using Arduino Mega 2560 as control unit to collect important panel parameters from HIT PVT panel and PV. Data logger system was also implemented to store all the parameters collected on SD card. The monitoring system was first tested in School of Electrical and Electronic Power Laboratory before an actual data were gathered at the rooftop building of School of Electrical and Electronic. This to ensure no shading on the panel and complete irradiance profile of the site can be collected. From the data collected, it was found that the HIT panel with thermal water collector has 12% to 14% better power output compare to HIT panel without thermal water collector. Overall the data PV monitoring system has successfully gathered important PV parameters and allow performance of HIT panel on different conditions to be assessed.
