Abstract
Radiation therapy is one of the cancer treatment methods available where radiation is delivered to the radiosensitive tissues and the radiation dose to the tumour target is maximising while sparing normal tissues around the treatment region. While treatment planning systems (TPS) have been developed to calculate radiation dose to tissue equivalent materials, however there are patients who present with high-density medical implants during radiation treatment. Computed Tomography images were used here for tumour delineation and CT-ED data acquisition for the TPS algorithm from the individual scanner. CT number of high-density materials were analysed in 12-bit depth, 12-bit depth extended and 16-bit depth DICOM images. The CT number relation analysed in 80 kV, 100 kV and 120 kV in Siemens Somatom (12-bit and 12-bit extended) and Toshiba AquilionLB (16-bit) CT scanners. The analysis shows that the 16-bit depth in the 120kV image provides stable CT numbers for high-density materials and has been implemented in the CT-to-electron density (ED) curve in the TPS.
