Abstract
Newspapers have indirectly contributed and become the medium for both the
elite and non-elite groups. In Malaysia, the controversial banning of popular concert
performances by Michael Jackson in 1996 and the KRU in 1997 depicts the close link
between politics and culture. The ban shows the efforts by the ruling elite comprising of
the Cabinet from the federal government, which uses the newspapers to determine the
status of the performances by both groups. This reveals the fact on who determines the
news and the discourse on culture.
Quantitative content analysis methodology was chosen to analyse the case study
about the ban on the two groups above. Berita Harian was chosen for content analysis
because it is a nationwide newspaper. It also has the largest number of readership in
Bahasa Malaysia.
The main finding in this 'Coverage of Cultural Issue in Malaysia: A Case Study
on the Coverage of the KRU and Michael Jackson Concert in the Berita Harian shows
that the intervention by ruling elite is capable of influencing and determining the
popular culture even though newspaper like Berita Harian have tried to give a fair and
neutral coverage. The ban was lifted to both the performances by KRU and Michael
Jackson even though there were many objections by various religious institutions and
l non-government organizations. This finding depicts that the ruling elite yields great
influence in determining and shaping cultural thoughts as reported in the Berita Harian.
