Abstract
This dissertation examines the self-awareness and self-preparedness of
emergency evacuation among Malaysian passengers at Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KLS)
Station, with a particular focus on how the passengers understand and rate the location
of evacuation plans, emergency buttons, assembly area, emergency exit signs, evacuation
route and location of another exit. A conducted survey with 329 respondents shows that
the level of self-awareness and self-preparedness among the passengers are in the
moderate level. Although the majority of respondents (48.0%) are familiar with the KLS
Station, but they are still not aware with the evacuation procedure. More specifically, a
significant proportion of the respondents do not know the locations of evacuation plans
(50.8%), emergency red button (45.3%), assembly area (52.0%), evacuation route
(51.0%) or location of another exit (41.6%). In terms of demographic differences, results
from Independent Sample t-Test revealed that there are some differences in self
awareness and self-preparedness between males and females, familiar and unfamiliar
passengers with that station as well as among the different age groups. The critical issues
that need to be improved by the management team and manager of emergency response
at KLS Station are the location of evacuation plans, assembly area and evacuation route
that obtained the mean score below 2.5. Findings of this study can assist managers of
emergency response in developing appropriate strategies, design solutions, trainings and
education campaigns for effective and safe evacuation. Moreover, the results are a
valuable resource in developing and verifying mathematical and theoretical models
aiming to study passengers’ evacuation in a train station.
